Much of his drive to excel was instilled by his parents, German and Austrian immigrants who were themselves high achievers. Martin's parents taught all their children to take great pride in their work, and that pride was the impetus for Martin to earn two master's degrees. He embarked upon a successful tenure in the field of education, teaching English as a Second Language overseas, developing solid course curricula, teacher training and literacy programs, always with an eye toward achieving the best possible outcomes.
An Early Beginning
Born in Quebec and raised in the U.S., Martin considers the year he spent living in Germany with his grandmother as a major turning point in his life. While there he not only developed his lifelong fascination with mountains, but also cultivated a natural curiosity about the world around him that would lead to interests as varied as fine wines, good furniture and art, as well as a strong social conscience and involvement with Amnesty International and Habitat for Humanity. Raised by a hiker and an alpine climber, Martin has always loved the outdoors . He enjoys downhill and cross-country skiing, hiking and sailing with his wife, Karla, as well as a good bicycle ride through the mountains with his friends.
